Brief History of Lions Clubs

The Lions Club of Burnham is affiliated to Lions Clubs International, the largest volunteer community service organisation in the world. There are 46,000 clubs in 193 countries with 1.4million members.

1917. Melvin Jones is the prime mover in founding Lions Clubs in Chicago.

 

1920. Lions Clubs become International with the formation of Clubs in Canada.

 

1925. Helen Keller asks that Lions to become the "Knights of the Blind"

            (since then Lions have saved or restored the sight of 60 million people)

1928. First Clubs outside North America formed in China.

 

1945.  Lions invited to help write the United Nations Charter.

 

1948. Lions are  given consultant status in the Economic and Social council of the UN.

 

1950. At the request of the Queen (the late Queen Mother) her equerry forms the first Lions Club in the United kingdom.

 

2000. The Lions Club of Burnham receives its Charter.

 

2004.  Her Royal Highness Sophie Countess of Wessex becomes the Lions Royal Patron.
